Objection to St Helens Council’s plans to extend Omega on green belt land

Great Sankey Parish Council wishes to inform Great Sankey residents that they have lodged an objection to plans to the extension of the Omega site in a westerly direction onto greenbelt land in Bold. Access to the development will be via the existing Omega roads network.

Proposals have been submitted by applicants Omega St Helens Ltd/TJ Morris (Home Bargains) to St Helens Council’s planning Department to open up an area of green belt land to the west of Omega South, south of the M62. The application has been submitted on the basis of the needs of the applicant who also claims that it will assist both St Helens and Warrington Councils to meet their objectives for increasing employment opportunities as outlined in their respective draft local plans. The application has two elements, the first to build the warehouse/offices already proposed for Home Bargains with a further outline application for additional warehouses at a later date which will be subject of further application. The Home Bargains application includes on-site parking for 576 vehicles and loading facilities for 383 HGV’s.

Peter Watson, Chairman of Great Sankey Parish Council said “Over recent years, the Parish Council have regularly been made aware of residents’ concerns regarding traffic problems, particularly HGVs using residential roads. The Council believes that the volume of additional traffic generated by this development will be to the absolute detriment of our community. We have regularly made Warrington Council aware of these concerns.’’

This development of Omega West is only mentioned briefly in both Councils’ draft local plans. The Parish Council received no formal notification from St Helens of the application despite previous written requests to be included in consultative processes. The objections have been lodged on the basis of insufficient detail in the local plans, inadequate traffic management and the use of Green Belt Land

Peter Watson added “The full documentation is only accessible on St Helens Council website under reference P/2020/0061/HYBR and comments must be submitted online. It is hoped that despite the short notice, residents will be able to support us by also lodging their comments in opposition.’’

Deadline for comments is 19th February 2020
